Celebrating 'Breguet: Watchmakers Since 1775' With Emmanuel Breguet In New York City

Last week, HODINKEE and Breguet got together to celebrate a significant event for Breguet enthusiasts, and indeed for anyone interested in the history of watchmaking: the release of the long-awaited second edition of Breguet, Watchmakers Since 1775, by Emmanuel Breguet. The first edition of the book came out in 1997 and has been out of print for some time, and the new edition brings all of the detail of the original along with updated images and text.

The new book focuses on the life, work, and horological innovations of Abraham L. Breguet, detailing the story of his rise to prominence as one of pre-Revolutionary France's most famed and sought-after watchmakers; the difficult years during the French Revolution during which he was forced to close his Paris workshops and return to his home in Switzerland; and his return to Paris, with the development of an international network that brought Breguet clocks and replica watches far abroad from France. Though the vast majority of the book concentrates on the life and work of the Master himself, the entire history of Breguet is covered in detail, through ownership by the Breguet family after Breguet's death, to ownership by the Browns of England, all the way up to incorporation of Breguet into the Swatch Group, under the leadership of Marc A. Hayek in the present day.

Guests joined HODINKEE Editor-in-Chief Jack Forster, and Emmanuel Breguet, for a look at the latest edition of the book, as well as to experience the whole range of current Breguet watches. Thanks to everyone who joined us, and thanks to Emmanuel Breguet for a memorable evening of insights into Breguet's work and life. Just a reminder, if you happen to be in Paris, don't forget to visit the Breguet Museum at 6 Place Vendôme, whose collection is curated by Emmanuel Breguet. Breguet, Watchmakers Since 1775, is available at Breguet boutiques world wide; for more info check out breguet.com.
